![]() ![]() I can’t overstate just what superb work Mark Gatiss does too, as The Captain. I suspect that’ll bristle with some, although I quickly soaked into it, and very much enjoyed the interplay, and the benefits of having two different generations of Doctor gradually learning off one another. As enjoyable as the dialogue the first Doctor is given very often is, there’s an argument that there’s a slightly too outdated streak to it that doesn’t feel very Hartnell-y. ![]() It’s often very funny, too, with the terrific Bradley’s first Doctor capturing the look and feel of William Hartnell’s take on the character, even if the words coming out of his mouth don’t always seem to. Multi-Doctor episodes – even the one with Colin Baker and Patrick Troughton – are always a lot of fun, and Moffat doesn’t resist the opportunity to have Peter Capaldi and David Bradley clashing with one another. With footage from “The Tenth Planet,” it then picks up from the surprise ending of “The Doctor Falls,” as two Doctors at the end of their respective generations come together. It started, actually, more as a two hander. The advantage here is we all know where “Twice Upon A Time” was heading, but it was about how it was going to get there. Rather, each coming to terms in their own way with their own mortality, and accepting it.īy keeping the narrative arcs to a concentrated minimum, Steven Moffat – for his final Doctor Who script – can flesh these characters and their stories out (and he really does), free from the need to gallop through exposition to get to a resolution. All four either dead or dying, with no massive dastardly plot to foil. The Doctor, The Doctor, Mark Gatiss’ Captain and Bill Potts. At the start of “Twice Upon A Time,” it soon becomes clear that it’s effectively a four-hander. Having learned from his mistakes with Martha, the Tenth Doctor's friendship with Donna became a joyous one that could have lasted forever had Donna's story not ended in tragedy.I noted in the spoiler-free review that one of the things it does right is to narrow its focus. ![]() He would later tell Donna Noble he was just looking for a friend with whom to travel. This attachment to his companions revealed his desire for long-term companionship, even if what the Doctor was looking for was not necessarily romantic in nature. The way in which the Tenth Doctor let his hearts rule his head (for better or worse) was yet another indicator of his more flawed, more emotional and ultimately more human nature. Rose had earned a special place in the Doctor's hearts and once he started traveling with Martha, his thoughts often dwelled on the loss of his former companion, leading him to overlook the valuable friend he had found in his new one. Ironically, after Rose's departure, this very need for companionship often led him to neglect his new companion, Martha Jones, and her feelings for him. When the Doctor lost Rose to a parallel universe at the end of Doctor Who Season 2, it soon became apparent that even without their particular bond, the Tenth Doctor needed a human companion at his side. Although their feelings remained unspoken while they were together, the strong emotional bond that had formed between them again brought out a more emotional and less detached side of the Doctor. Throughout their travels, a romantic interest also developed between the two. Later in his tenth life, after being parted from Rose and then reuniting with her during Doctor Who's Season 4 finale, the Doctor would tell Rose that when they first met he was driven by war and revenge, but she made him better. In his tenth incarnation, the Doctor grew closer with Rose Tyler and her influence on him was evident in the differences from his previous incarnation. This triggered his regeneration into the Tenth Doctor, who seemed to have been cleansed of his predecessor's vengeful streak. ![]() Ultimately, the Ninth Doctor gave his life to save Rose after she wielded the power of the Time Vortex to save Earth from the Daleks. Seeing time and space through Rose's eyes also helped ground the Doctor, reminding him of his values and showing him how to choose compassion over violence. After losing his people, the Doctor found companionship in Rose, showing him he was not alone in the universe. Over their time together, Rose helped the Doctor overcome the emotional damage dealt by the Time War. ![]()
